Mealworm question

gex53 Jan 23, 2004 01:43 AM

I just read that big long thread about sand and all that down there lower on the page. I found the mealworm part interesting. I've been under the impression that mealworms were proven to be healthier than crickets, waxworms, and all the others. This is also the first i've heard of mealies not being good as a staple. Can someone please clear this for me? I appreciate it.

Well if you read the whole post you might get your answer..... Monte (power geckos) wrote up a big paragraph..... The mealworm thing is just my opinion and I feal a varied diet is best but others obviously keep leos just on mealworms and do just fine..... But again that is not my way of doing things..... There is a something in the mealworms shell called chitin that leos can have a hard time digesting but from what was explaied to me it should not be much of a problem in healthy leos and it is recomended that you should feed you leos freshly molted mealworms (lighter in color and softer) so they have no problems.....

One more thing, from what I have read up on and did alittle studying on, The best source of nutrition comes from silk worms..... Molecularly broken down, they are more of a whole food item than the rest..... Then again you can also fill the voids with suppliments and gut loading the other food items......

I thought silkworms were the little fatty things that you should only feed as a treat? or was that waxworms?

butterworms. I was told they are great for leos. I tried some but only Boo would eat them.

Mealworms are fine as a staple diet. But staple diet doesn't mean it should be the only thing they eat.

Butterworm are an exelent source for leos...... Wax worm are those little fatty things....LOL..... But my leos get them more than just a treat.... They are offerd every other day along with their "main" food item wether it is crickets or silk worms..... A couple every other day wont hurt them..... If given in moderation like this it will not get your leos fat.....
