taming subadult female...

dmlove Jun 06, 2003 02:42 PM

well i have this female, and she is about 14 inches long, i got her about 3 weeks ago, but all she does is scratch to get out of the tank (its a small tank, 20 g, but im in the process of building her 4 ft cage) and then when i take her out she just RUNS and RUNS away from me and is all afraid...i brought her outside in my hand but she started openeing her mouth at me so i thought i was stressing her so i brought her inside and set her on the living room floor, and she openes her mouth and ATTACKS me...i just kind of picked her up right there, and brought her to the cage and put her in. Any suggestions? ive been handfeeding her for about 2 weeks, and she readily takes the food, but doesnt really change her 'femaledog' personality to me any suggestions thanks guys

Okay first things: SHe scractches at the cage b/c she doesn't like it, And thats b/c it's wayyy wayyy to small. I know your building her a new one and all, but you need to get her out of that small cage as soon as possible. Now my dragon scratches alot to get out too, thats b/c he hasn't been out in a while so that just makes me hear him and that he wants out now. and he doesn't stop untill i do so. NOw as for attacking you? Females can be agressive sometimes, and she doensn't know you intirely yet, and so shes defending herself. What you need to try to do is hold in your "HANDS" as long as you possibly can, then once she starts squrrming to a extend where you can't keep her with out hurting her, put her away in a cage where she can roam, cool off. You want to teach her that you are the dominant on and that if she squerms she's not gonna get her way. Every day you need to increase the time you are holding here. And for as putting here in ur livining room floor, that great, larger area for them to explorer. Just don't start doign it till she can trust you as a person. I know that some people use the technique of letting the misc reptile bite you to show your not afriad. I don't suggest it, i only heard it form a local herp (he's kinda wierd) just though i throw that info in there.

im gonna try to start holding her like that tomorow...(letting her 'cool off' from today) and then tonight and tomorow im gonna build like no other, and try to finish this darn cage!! then i hope she is happy and accepts me, and soon my sweet fat male (lol) will breed with her (once she grows a bit more, however)..THANKS for all th info!!
