It seems that everything I read talks about the benefits of acquiring only captive bred babies; however, for a number of animals, especially of certain types, few are rarely if ever seen. For these rarer types, such as the Egyptian Torts, Pancake Torts, Spider Torts, etc., has anybody thought of establishing a national register containing who has what type of tortoise, along with contact information so that other people interested in obtaining those species can enter into meaningful dialog with those who have them already? Or perhaps to promote breeding programs that might help preserve what little genetic diversity exists in our captive populations.
I would like to hear from people who raise the following: Pancakes, Egyptians, Spiders, Padlopers (Homopus ssp.), Chacos, Impressed, Burmese Mountains (Black and Brown)...in order to get a feel for whether they acquired wild caught stock or captive bred babies; and to hear if they are having any success with breeding these torts.
Thanks.
