Hatchlings not eating

mnh3281 Jan 23, 2004 09:11 AM

I adopted two RES hatchlings, both of which I have had for approximately 2 weeks. They are both swimming fine. I have yet to see either of the turtles eat in the two weeks that I have had them. Once or twice a day I try to feed them baby Reptomin sticks, only two in the aquarium in hopes of them eating, but they end up on the bottom of the tank by the end of the day. I have tried tiny peices of hamburger and chicken as well, but they were not intersted so I took them out of the tank. Do you have any suggestions as to how to get these babies to eat? I am worried! Thanks!

Hi,

How warm is the water in your tank? To stimulate the diet, I've increased my water temp to mid-80s or a bit higher. It worked wonders.

Plus, do you have easy access out of the water and hiding spots for safety and comfort? They might eat once they feel secure.

Keep trying and I'm sure they'll come around. Good luck.

I have increased the water temperature and today finally noticed one of the hatchlings trying to nibble at the reptomin stick, although it got bored with it after one try and got back out of the water. I am going to stick with this because they are appearing to be more interested in the food, but just in case, are there any other thingsg as food I should try and introduce to them to stimulate their hunger? I have the reptomin sticks and dried shrimp. Thanks!

I agree that warming the water up might help. You might also try some dried shrimp, I think the can calls it "turtle treat". My turtles would eat that when they wouldn't eat anything else. It shouldn't be a major part of their diet but it might get them going.

Try not to worry. If they are healthy and acting otherwise normal they will eat eventually. They can go a long time without food.
