Floor Space........ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

RedQuake Jan 23, 2004 10:00 AM

I've been calling around to different places looking for a tank with a larger floor space than my 40gal tank (18" X 36". From what i've found so far i'd have to get a 100 gal tank to get a larger floor space of 24" instead of 18". All the other size tanks (50-60 gal) are just taller.

If i create multiple levels and alot of hides, is it, in you all of your opinions, still ok to put my 5 girls into my 40 gallon???

I still want to go see some of the corner tanks for myself as they have a 70 gal one with sliding front doors on sale right now but if i don't have to spend that money it would be more cost effective and i could use that money to do up the 40 gal really elaborate.

I'm just looking for opinions....

Thanks
Red

I have a 40gal myself..i'd say with the right amount of hides they should be just fine, 40gals are pretty big.. in my opinion you could easily put 5 leos in there with no problems..just as long as they all get along..after quarentine i plan on putting my snow(female) jungle albino(male)normal(female, currently already in there) and whatever new females i get at the next expo..but there will be at least 5 in my 40gal..that would be my breeding colony, anyways..i say yes a 40gal is just fine for 5 females

I had one like that years ago...I kept my box turtles in it. I loved it and was so sad when I accidently broke it.

Wouldn't it be cheaper or at least more feasable to make one out of plexiglass than buy a glass one? I'm just wondering, I've never actually checked prices of plexiglass. I guess like anything else, you might get a deal or might overpay.

Actually plexi glass is more expensive than glass, at least where i am. It would be fun to build one of my own but right now i'd prefer not to. Time is not that available for me at this point. Plexiglass also scratches really easy and i can't cut it here, but i can cut glass....used to work in a framing art gallery.

This is a viv I made for my 2 frogs out of plexiglass. I thought it was pretty easy to make & would encourage others to try it if you're not finding the size tank you want.

WOW that is awesome!!!!! How did you make it? Did you use silicone to put the pieces together? Does it scratch bad? I would love to make something for my geckos....a huge habitat, males on one side, females on the other (yes it would be HUGE).

Thanks for showing the pic

I felt like it was relatively easy. I planned out the dimensions (make sure to subtract the width of the 2 side pieces from the length of the 2 end pieces, so they all fit together) & used silicone aqaurium sealant to put it together. Over time, I've seen some seperation at the joints. My hubby suggested I put some sort of runner around the outside top & bottom, or at least at the corners, but I had no idea what to use or how to do that... Any suggestions would be appreciated because I'd gladly do this project again. I made the tops out of plexiglass the same size as the bottom, but cut in 1/2, so there's 2 tops (my frog tank is divided). Next time, I'd have these made smaller & run a little shelf around the inside for them to rest on. Live & learn... We drilled 1" holes in the top for air circulation & screwed in the handles.

Where do you order your tanks from?

I've bought my 20 gal long tanks from Petsmart, they have a setup with a light, bulb, food samples a background....etc. The tanks all have sliding screen tops but are around $100.00 each. The 15 gal tanks i bought from a fish warehouse that stocks tons of different fish and supples and my 40 gal i bought at an exotic animal store. By far they have some of the best prices for tanks and they also have a 70 gal corner tank with a sliding front to it, cool. Take into consideration though that i live in Canada so other than Petsmart only the fish warehouse might also be in the U.S.

In responce to the corner problem of your tank, i have a suggestion. There is wood corner molding that you could use to make a top or bottom, granted i wanted to do that for my 15 gal tanks as i don't have proper tops for them, however i suck at doing mitre cuts. I should remember how to do this as i used to make picture frames but its been a few years and well if you don't use it you lose it.....lol. It was the only time fractions ever made sence to me though, theres alot of math involved. Theres also plastic and metal molding too, the metal stuff we used when putting up a few walls after drywalling. They protect the corners and is put up before plastering.

I have a 25 gallon tall tank that i wanted to use for Zeek (Petsmart again) but the sliding top opens the entire top of the tank and well Zeek is a smarty....he's good as trying to escape. So i thought about removing one side, what would be the front and installing sliding glass doors. The track molding my dad found has really large spaces, for really thick glass so i'll probably go with plexi glass instead for less weight. All i need to do now is get that front piece of glass off without breaking the rest of the tank

I've seen how some people have made their own fish aquariums, and they used wood to make the bottom and top frames. I'm not sure what kind of dimensions. Definitely more work, but it would give a lot longer life to your habitat. And I would think that even just adding a bottom frame would probably benefit it from losing it's seam adhesion. Btw, That's a great looking froggy home!
