Hypomelanistic?

bigmoqui Jan 23, 2004 12:48 PM

Can someone explain this term to me? It's not on the list of terms here at kingsnake, and I keep seeing it come up on different sites, and the snakes they have pictured look normal to me. I could be mistaken, though. Thanks again.

Hypo or Hypomelanistic is a term used to describe an animals that has reduced and/or minimal black when compared against a normal colored animal. Varying degrees of this trait leads to a lot of confusion on the part of hobbist. In reality it is often a term that is misused, but in its purest form there is no comparison between a normal colored animal and a hypo.

Hope that helps,

Thank You for your response John.
P.S. I have since found a range map on the net for Arizona gophers, and it seems that my gopher falls well within the range of a Sonoran. This being said and the pit market being geared more toward locality animals I understand why nobody had anything to say about me breeding two completely different looking Sonorans together. But I live within Az and it is illegal to sell native animls(WC or CB) so I wasn't planning on putting them on the market anyway. It is just a hobby for me, but I appreciate this forum and your sponsorship of it. I only wish there were more people posting pics of gophers. Oh, and I saw your albinos John. They look awesome. Since I can't seem to find a rusty I'm thinking of getting one of these. That has to be the best looking pit hands down, any albino gopher.
