Mice or Rats?

chiefmeat68 Jan 23, 2004 12:51 PM

I currently feed my 2003 boas mice. The main reason for this is they are much cheaper. Most everyone else I know feed their boas rats. Are their any good reasons to switch to rats? I realize that rats will eventually be necessary because my boas will outgrow mice but is there any problems with mice for the meanwhile?

I was feeding small rats to my baby boas, but noticed in some of them very unusual stool, notably my motley. When I switched them to mice it got better immediatly. I do get them on rats as soon as they can eat fully weaned rats though, it can be hard to switch some snakes over when they get older. For now though mice are fine. Craig Kade

also when switching to rats some boas will not eat them at first.
I just got over this with my albino male. Just remember: DON'T GIVE IN TO THEM TOO SOON!!!!!

Wait them out for a few weeks. I feed every 6-7 days, so when he refused 2 weeks straight, I guess he got really hungry because by the 3rd week he ate 2 f/t pup rats. It was a little tempting to just give in and toss him a mouse, but that would have only set the problem back 2-3 weeks longer.
