Carpet is unsanitary.

It's up to you. I use carpet (actually Lizard Liner), I spot clean daily and switch out carpet weekly. The old piece is cleaned (hot soapy water), disinfected (with Nolvasan/Virosan) and dried for the next week. With wood chips (and other loose substrates) I think there is a possibility that you may not spot urates/feces as easily and can just as easily have your snake living in a less clean environment until you change out the substrate completely or happen upon the missed urates/feces later. Just my opinion. I also don't like the idea of feeding outside the cage - that's another reason I like the carpet.
