Macklot's?

metalmorphosis Jan 23, 2004 04:03 PM

I got a gorgeous yearling male yesterday but haven't been able to find out a great deal about them. I know enough to get by, but need more info...can anyone help out?

I've been lurking here for a while now, just hadn't signed up. I'm Tamsin

I've had corns and royals in the past but now I just have this one and a neonate Western Hognose. Seems like a pretty good forum, you might be stuck with me for a while.

Check out www.vpi.com as they have a nice spread on this species. In summary, they make great captives and are fairly easy to take care of. I typically set up my subadult/small adult Liasis mackloti in the 36" Vision, with a thick slab of newspaper for substrate along with a few shredded pieces, a jumbo sized plastic water crock, 4" heat tape connected to the bottom of the back of the cage that is then connected to a Big Apple thermostat, so that my ambient temps in the cage range from 84F to 95-98F. I keep all of my snakes in a room that is temp controlled (the heat tape will do little to raise the ambient temp in the cage if your room is typically cool). I feed my macklot's 1-2 suitably sized prey (they can pack down a decent sized meal) every 10-12-14 days (depending upon weight of snake....I like them robust and taught but not fat and overweight). Water is offered ad libitum and changed at a minimum once every other day or more frequently as needed. The timor island macklot's will double clutch each year, and can obtain sizes upto 10 /- feet for females, about 7 /- feet for males. Roti's slightly smaller and Semau's kind of between the two. I generally use the above maintenance regime for most of my subadults/adult pythons, and use temp ranges of 82-88F for hatchlings and young'ins. You could easily adjust this information and they would likely do very well.....this is a very tolerable species but watch the temps (the lower end temps especially). Hope this gets you started in the right direction, but check out www.vpi.com and the Liasis website (I think it's Liasis.net.....I'm sure somebody can clarify this).
Cheers!

Thanks a lot...do you mist yours? I have been advised every 2-3 days. There are some lovely snakes on that site but I can't find the macklots...whereabouts is it?

Generally, we lightly mist all of our Vision cages about 2-3 times per week briefly with deionized water, and the rack systems about once per week as the water dish in the Rubbermaid rack system containers seems to provide sufficient humidity, even with numerous ventillation holes drilled on the sides. I'll have to go visit the Barker's site and see if I can find the link to the macklot's page and place a followup note here. Take care!

Congrats -- Macklot's are great snakes!! (but I'm biased, I suppose)

Yes, liasis.net is a good site -- under "Liasis Links" for "mackloti mackloti" there are quite a few resources (mostly pics & basic care sheets, but still pretty good). The forums there are good too -- that was where I picked up all the tidbits of care info when I got my macklot's about a year ago. Now, he's a healthy, voracious four feet long

Here's a pic I just happened to take tonight since for some reason he decided to drag his dinner into his waterbowl...
