what kind of snake?

jkturkey Jan 23, 2004 07:04 PM

Seen in Waller County, Texas (40 mi. WNW of Houston).
About 12" long, finger thickness. Light brown/tan color
with triangular dark brown patches. Pattern is remarkably
uniform. Discovered while clearing brush pile.

That is hard to say based on your description. I could have been a young copperhead, but I couldn't be sure based on what you described.

I have a web site with photos of all the snake that occur around College Station and the surrounding counties. It would also cover Waller county. Look at some of the photos there and see if you can find it. The link is below.

right on
a young Southern Copperhead
the 3-lobed markings were very uniform on the specimen I saw
4 miles North of Hempstead, near the Waller/Grimes county line
the snake ws not agressive, but it was very alert and stood its
ground
thank you very much

They are pretty common little guys. We found a lot here in Houston last year around this time of year. They are normally not too aggressive as long as you do not step on them/provoke them (though there are exceptions). You see a fair amount of snakes out there?

first one I've seen in the 14 months we've been here; but
with a wooded lot and no mice or moles, I was sure we had
some snakes around
