This good for mealworms?

paradisio Jan 23, 2004 07:38 PM

Sorry my first time try to breed mealworms, I got a nice sized tubs, a bit bigger than a shoebox and I put 2 inches of oat bran/and oat cereal Put some mealies in and a cut up potatoes with the inside part down, keeping around 75

I am still looking for a closeby feed store, went to one today, was like 20 miles away and it ended up being closed lol. So I will try to pick up some better stuff for the next box

That's too much still. For each bin, say 1 inch of bedding in a 10 by 10 space, put no more than 1/4 of a potato or about 3 inches of a carrot. I've learned this the hard way...less is more with mealworms. If the humidity is too high, even just a little too high, you'll end of growing mold or create a breeding ground for book mites.

About PetCo's mealworms...I have that problem with my local store too. They are understaffed and no one checks the mealworm/waxworm/superworm stock. When I buy them, I always check the containers before I leave the store...sometimes openning every one to find the one I like best.

The good news is, you can take that back to the store and they will exchange it. They have a wonderful return policy and will take anything back...even a half eaten back of dog food because your dog didn't like it.

I have a tub of mealworms that I have neglected for...maybe 1-2 months. Well, they are still growing at room temperature, but very slow. Probably would have had more worms if I had given some a moisture source during that time along with heat, but the point is, they don't need alot of moisture to survive. Actually mold would be the worst thing for them. So I agree less is better. Now I just give them a moisture source every other day and they seem fine. I make sure they can consume what I give them in a day or it is too much.
