HOW CAN I TELL

wardawg Jan 23, 2004 07:57 PM

I got a 6month old ball and wanted to know what is the easiest way to tell if he's go'ing to shed. I tried feeding one day and he wouldnt eat he ate three times before. i noticed his belly was kind of pink so i thought he was sheding is there any other way to find out if he's ready to shed. He's also been spending a lot of time in his water bowl.

Welcome to ball pythons! Yes the pink belly is a good indication the snake is going into a shed. But, coupled with the soaking MAY be an indication that temps, particularly belly heat (undertank heat) may be too high. Make sure you have the proper temp range of low 80's to low-mid 90's. Use a thermometer, don't guess! Now, as it goes through the shed cycle, it'll get dull and the eyes will get cloudy blue-grey. A few days before it sheds it will appear less dull and the eyes clear. MAKE SURE your humidity is high during these few days by spraying with warm (not hot) water. If you do this you'll end up with a good shed. Good luck! Scott J. Michaels DVM
