Eye Caps........

MightyPython Jan 23, 2004 10:09 PM

I know this question has been asked a hundred times but how can you tell if the eye caps are still on after a shed? I've heard people say that the eyes look cloudy if the caps are still on. Well, my BP just shed and his eyes don't look cloudy but it looks like I can see a dent in each eye when I look closely. Is that just something that is normal in their eyes that I never noticed before or does it mean that the eye caps are still on? What else can I look for to make sure? He didn't shed in one piece this time but it all came off anyway. No pieces left on the body or even the head that I can see. Thanks for any help on this and sorry for asking a question that has already been asked before. Just want to make sure on this.

I'm fairly certain that dents mean dehydration (beginning). What's your humidity? My BP had dents in his eyes. I misted the tank twice a day and they were gone in less than 2 days.

Hope it helps.

...it's not all that uncommon, especially after a shed. They'll pucker out on their own. Spraying certianly won't hurt. Retained caps USUALLY will have tiny tags of skin hidden in the fundus and can easily be seen by rolling the eye ball gently to one side. Removal is a delicate process as in all snakes and shouldn't be attempted without the proper forceps and wetting. Scott J. Michaels DVM

Should I get the forceps before or after I wet myself...???
