Question about cross-breeding and sperm retention ...

Bill S. Jan 24, 2004 02:16 PM

Hi.

Very interesting thread about Hog Island Boas and cross breeding. I am not a boa breeder, but I'm wondering ...

I've read that some female boas can retain sperm for as long as three years. If this is true, suppose a breeder decides to cross a female Hog with a male boa that's not a Hog. The breeding is a success and a litter of crosses is created.

Now, if that same breeder decides to breed that female Hog with a male Hog a year or two later, is it possible that the offspring could still be crosses, since the female may have retained sperm from the prior breeding?

Interesting stuff. Thanks.

Regards,

Bill

That is a very good point, and one I have heard many times before. As far as "can it happen" I have heard of a couple occurances where a female retained sperm from a prior year and produced a mix of traits in one litter. (similar to the occasional breeding of multiple males to one female)

I would say with that possibility that a female of a more "rare" origin would have to be considered "tainted" for pure breedings at that point after, atleast for several years after the original breeding.
