concering the breeding article written by Jeff Ronne

dan_binderup Jan 24, 2004 02:21 PM

I was just reading the article on this site http://www.theboaphile.com/article.html assume many of you already have read this IMO fine article.
Now I don't keep boa constrictor but I do know that some of them lives in the same region as brb.
So I was wondering wether some of these "facts" is valid for breeding, copulation, ovulation ect.
Especially the part about courtship, he mentions that it often takes weeks of courtship from the male before the female let's him copulate. furthermore it is said that when copulating the tails often "lay beside" each other rather than wrapping around each other. http://www.theboaphile.com/article_files/8.html (read the part before and the part about courtship on this page)
It would be really nice if we could get a debate going concering this subject.
I and undoubtedly lot's of other brb keepers would feel some relief if a little light were to be caste on this "mystery".
For example this pic. posted below (and posted before) if this seen while having this particular article in mind, there have probably never been any real copulation! let me know what you think.
Please anyone who have any experince or ideas concerning breeding brb's, let us all know what you thing!

Best regards
Dan Binderup

Dan,
. I have read Jeff Ronne's article and also his book. I think it has lots of good information. You should also read Gus Rentfro's website. It has lots of good breeding info. There are two very different views about Boa Constrictor breeding and these two different views are well described by these two breeders.
. BRB breeding ???? I know that one breeding can be enough to produce a good litter but I think that letting them mate for as long as they will will improve the chances. When my BRBs breed they usually have their tails wrapped like the PIC. BRBs are more flexible than adult Boa Constrictors. I have seen a few BRBs breedings with straight tails side by side.
Jeff

Hi Jeff
I have read the other article you are refering to, and I think it is very good. yesterday I caught my pair copulating and I saw the hemipenis "in" the female. and I didn't thought that this looked like the other "breedings" I observed. Like Jeff R describes the male "wag" it's tail, I did not noticed this behaviour on earlier breeding attempts. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera on me when it all happened.

Best regards

I have found that with both Brazilian and Colombian rainbows the tails are 'corkscrewed' or like yours are in the photo.
I haven't seen them side by side either.
Also, they don't seem to have to be together for any real length of time before actual mating takes place. They are more like colubrids in this regard in that the male jumps on the female and breeds her!
There can be some time spent on tail search behavior though.
