Sterlizing Wood

blue_tegu Jun 06, 2003 04:25 PM

Hey all, just a quick question. Does anybody know what must be done to driftwood before you put it into your reps cage. I was wondering if it needs to be sterilized/sanitized first, but I have no idea how to do this. Thanks.

sure, this is what i do with everything i ever use ranging from drift wood to tiny twisting grape vines to any size of rock. all you really have to do is put the wood in a container and cover it in bleach water, ( i don't know exactly what the minimum is to use)but i used a gallon of bleach and filled my bathtub less than half way. . you can use an old garbage can or the tub ( if it won't ruin the finish on it) and let it soak in there for half an hour to an hour. then let it dry out in a sanitary manner. i let mine dry out by putting a fan or two in the bathroom with the dehumidifier going and shutting the door. make sure it is completely dry before putting it into the cage. i don't think the bleach has any effects on the animal, especially if it isn't gnawing on it or anything like that. i've been doing this for 3 years with my green basilisks, geckos, chameleons, and tegu. i also have friends that do this and haven't ever seen it do any damage.
