pic of planted vent tank

mbmcewen Jan 24, 2004 05:09 PM

This is my vent tank with 4 broms(red bird and pauciflora), 2 cryptanthus, 1 tillandsia bulbosa(red form), and 1 oxalis triangularis. I am thinking about an orchid and maybe creeping fig, but I haven't decided yet.

Also, the lights haven't gotten here yet so that is why it is pretty dark in there.

Opinions?

I like the setup. Is that a 10 gallon converted to a high, front-opening? The paucifola look really good, too. You might want some kind of vining plant to change the texture up a little, but as for what that should be without overtaking the tank, that's anyone's guess. How about a polypodium? I think those are great, and I really want to get one!

Thanks, the tank is a 15H side opening. I posted some pics a few days ago of the hinged opening and fan. So far I can run the fan at all times with no condensation and the humidity stays at or above 85% at the top of the tank.
As for polypodium, I had one in my other tank and liked it a lot. However, the polypodium I had was an Asian species, and I wonder if they all are. I want to stick with central and south American species. I have a philodendron with dark velvety leaves that might look nice. I may take a cutting.

Can't wait to get the little guys!

Hey! That looks really nice. The plants look great....I agree some vining plants would be a good addition, but overall great!
Just one suggestion, be careful with using a lot of cork like that because vents are awesome at hiding and you may never see them. With vents I tend to go with more simple setups just so that I know that they are ok.

Have fun!

Thanks! I was worried about the cork too, so I drilled holes through it in places and squirted expanding foam back there. They may hide from me, but I know that they won't be lost

I was going to say the same thing. The tank my newest pair of imitators are in has a corktile background and I siliconed some cork bark peices to it.I thought I had all the cracks sealed with sphagnum moss but they found a spot and stay back there most of the day.The tank hasn't really filled in so when it does I think they will be out more.I have had this happen with my first pair before and they laid eggs behind cork flats on the tank they were in at the time it so I collected alot of tads from brom axils but they seemed happy with it.I am liking the vents and my be getting some this spring, anyway good luck with them.

hmm, I may stuff some moss in the cracks that I see. I know they can't get behind the pieces, but I at least want to see them as much as possible. Thanks for the info.

Looks good, I like the larger rocks in the bottom. I keep meaning to pick up a bag of them.

Ya i think petsmart or petco has a 20lb bag or so for $15. At least that is what I was looking at. They had the black and different colored ones.

Hey Matt. The plants I sent you look great in the tank. I am glad everything arrived in good shape. You should have gotten a Begonia thelmae, so it could grow up the cork. Once you add more plants and it fills in, that's going to be a great tank. Good job.

I agree with Ken, you need to put some more filler plants, it looks really bare right now. The plants that you have won't fill it up, unless you wait a long time.

Marcin, I don't want to cover the background on this tank. I like thr contrast of the grey cork, black rocks, dark red flora. I will put in some sort of creeper though. Nothing like creeping fig though. Speaking of creeping fig, is that what you have covering the background of your large display tank? Awesome tank by the way. I have another tank with tree fern background, and I want something to crawl completely across it....is creeping fig the way to go?

Yeah, it's creeping fig... I think it's called Ficus pumilia. I just got another one, with leaves that are a little bit frosted. Looks pretty cool.

mbmcewen Jan 25, 2004 10:49 AM

Thanks Ken! I really like what I am seeing so far, and I really like the cork. I have a thelmae and also a philodendron in another tank that I may take a cutting of.

Thanks for the great products,
