Regenerated forked tail

RU_Ta2ed Jan 24, 2004 06:51 PM

Hi, I work at a pet store, and in the last shipment of juvenile iggies, one had a regenerated forked tail. The tails were the same size, like the original tail had been broken near bout 2/3rds of the way down, but not completely, so that when the new tail grew, it grew alongside the old tail. The new tail was of course darker colored, but it looked so odd that I wanted to know if anyone has or has heard of a forked tail iggie, and if so can you post a pic? We took pics of the one we had at the store(it was sold today)..I can get one to post, hopefully. PLease let me know if you have a pic of one so I can compare. Thanks, Janet

It really isnt that odd. We have had a couple of them come thru my rescue over the past year. The only thing I tend to watch more the regrowth for problems, since everyone I have had has had the second tail become necrotic.

The best way to describe it is that the tail starts to develop a thing called dry Gangrene, in which it starts to look just like a corn cob after you have eatten all the corn. It can also start to shrivel. Now when I get a forked baby in, I take them in for tail amputation right away. That way I can get the tail healed and know it is leaving in healthy condition and dont have to worry as much about the owners not wanting to pay a vet bill for amputation. Also I tend to pay 15$ for amputations while they are with me, and normal people pay between 30-45$. Rescue discount helps with that. Ill look and see, I know i have pics somewhere of necrotic tails. Just need to find one.
