Please help me identify type of uro!

spike77 Jan 24, 2004 06:56 PM

I bought a new uro last night at a pet store in Salem. It was in a terrible setup! Repti sand, 60watt bulb, icebure & romaine lettuce... anyway, it's home with us now, but we have no idea what type of uro it is! I suspect it is approx 1 -1.5 years old.
Don't have a digital camera yet, but will post a photo when I can.
Some unique characteristics are it has a bright orange snout, and the beginnings of orange coming through down it's back. It's overall body color seems dark gray and has bands of yellow spots with black dot centers. It's belly has a zebra striped pattern along the edges. Also, the snout seems somewhat longer or pointier than other uros.
I know it's hard to tell from just a description... I've been cruising around the net looking at pictures and can't seem to see anything quite like it. Any links to photo sites would be appreciated! (I've checked Deer Fern Farms photos).

thanks!

I am almost posative you have a saharan. Because you described the coloring, and they are usually available at reptile swaps. Also, it could be a moroccan so go back to deer fern farms and really get a good look at all the types of uros, especially saharans, and moroccans. How much did you pay for it. If it was under 60 dollars you got a saharan, if it was over 100 you probably got a moroccan. I am 99% posative you got a saharan, but if you paid a lot of money for this little guy then it might be a moroccan, but i doubt you got a morocan. The link below goes to Urotopia's available uros, look at their saharan's.

Thanks for the input Mike! We are beginning to think it is Sarahan too. Since it didn't have the appropriate heat for some time, we think it may have affected its coloring.. we are hoping that now that it has a nice hot basking site, its colors will really start to show. We bought it at a pet store and they told us they thought it was a Mali... but we knew better. I don't know the weight (but she's heavy) and she's about 9 inches long. We're guessing she's maybe a year to a year-and-a-half old. This pet store had her since November.
Thanks again. We'll post a picture as soon as we can!

also if it's a female the female Saharans are often very dull in color......i have a yellow one and she's mainly a brownish/greyish color with SOME yellow in her.
The males are the ones that are really colorful.

It wasn't that evil place in Lancaster Mall, was it? That was where I got my first uro - same terrible conditions. I normally don't even approach that store, and I shouldn't have that day, either, cuz I just went and supported them by buying her. Much as I adore her, I would NEVER do that again. They were telling me it was a Mali and they didn't usually have them and didn't know how to take care of her. She was crawling with crickets (and parasites). I bought her even though I KNEW I shouldn't. If that's the place, then you'd best get her to a vet for a fecal check ASAP!

Yep, that's the place! I kind of felt the same way. It was so obvious that they didn't know how to care for her. Actually, it seemed that the employee on duty had done a little research, but that since they didn't have the right supplies in the store (right bulbs, substrate, supplements, etc) he couldn't do anything about it. Also, he said she'd been there since November. We had put our Mali (Spike) to sleep earlier in the week and the kids were just so disappointed, so when we saw this one, they begged.
As far as the fecal... does the vet extract that or do I bring in a sample?

I just took Arthur in for a check up and took in a poo sample the next day when she produced one. I hear they can extract one if they need to, but my two haven't had that problem (knock on wood).

Good luck! Arthur has turned out great - fat and sassy after several months of decent accomodations and MUCH better food!
