egg bound female??...help

alieliza Jan 24, 2004 10:32 PM

I have a gravid female. The last time that she laid eggs was almost five and a half weeks ago. She is eating like a pig still and is big as a house. You can definitely see eggs in her but i just think its a little curious that she hasnt laid yet. Are there symptoms to being egg bound? How would I know if she was? What can I do about it if she is? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds eggbound, but I don't have any experience but I think that is a while past due date (or so I read)

Take her to the vet, if you can't... I read this a few minutes ago... Soak her in warm water, and massage her belly, this can relax the muscles and cause release, don't force them out, that can prove severely damageing... Unfortunately if these are fertile, they will probably go bad from being dropped in the water and taking on to much water, but I hope your adult is more important than killing her to get them out.

But still a good idea to go to the vet asap

I would keep an eye on her maybe she will lay in the next few days. I haven't had an eggbound female, but I belive not eating at all is a symptom. Since your female is still eating maybe she is takig her time. Last season I had a female that only layed once a month.
How many clutches has she layed already? Maybe she is done?
You could do the soaks and see if that helps , and if she stops eating or starts acting funny go to the vet.

This is her first season being bred. She was gravid when we bought her and she had laid twice i believe for the breeder from whom we got her. She has laid once already for us. This is her fourth time laying i believe. I dont really think though that its a matter of her being done, because im pretty positive we see eggs in her. I guess we will just give it a few days.

I wouldn't worry too much yet. There is no set interval to their egg laying. I've had them lay anywhere from every 2 weeks to every 6 weeks, some even longer at the end of the season. It depends on their age and nutrition/calcium levels alot.

Don't worry yet. If she is still eating well and active, she is just not ready to lay her eggs yet! When she stops eating for a day or two, gets restless and starts digging in her humid hide, she is going to lay soon!
