i want to breed leo's

shootist Jan 25, 2004 02:28 AM

ive got a 5 year old normal leo that i am going to attempt to breed. i can put her with any male leo? does the morph matter? can he be anything from jungle to patternless, from blizzard to hypo carrot tail, or anything else? or does it have to be a normal leo? also, does it have to be the same age as my female or can it be a few years younger?

any suggestions on what type of leo i should use to breed with my normal for cool results will be appreciated

also, can anyone explain a few words for me? tremper, het albino (is this heterozygous? i thought albino was recessive trait, how can it be het albino? plz explain). and how would i know if i got a homozygous dominant/recessive or heterzygous normal leo?

If you don't care what you get, as long as they are leopard geckos, you can breed your female to any male leopard geckos. As for age, leopard geckos (both sexes) can breed until they are close to 20 years old.

Ron Tremper was a big name leopard gecko importer and breeder. He was the major influence on popularizing the species as a pet. Now dead.

Het is short for heterozygous. A heterozygous albino has one normal gene paired with one albino mutant gene. The albino mutant gene is recessive to the normal gene because the heterozygous albinos look normal. If a heterozygous albino looked like a homozygous albino, then the albino mutant gene would be dominant to the normal gene.

If you know a mutant gene is recessive to the normal gene that's at the same location, then the mutant is homozygous if it shows the mutant appearance. In other words, albino is recessive to normal, so if a gecko is albino, it's homozygous for albino.

There are two ways to determine whether an animal is homozygous for a dominant mutant, heterozygous for a dominant mutant, or heterozygous for a recessive mutant: by pedigree or by breeding test.

A breeding test to determine whether an animal is heterozygous for a recessive mutant gene: Mate it to an animal that is homozygous for the mutant gene and produce seven babies. If at least one baby is homozygous for the mutant gene, then the animal under test is heterozygous for the mutant gene.

A breeding test to determine whether an animal is homozygous or heterozygous for a dominant mutant gene: Mate it to an animal that is homozygous normal and produce seven babies. If at least one baby is normal, then the animal under test is heterozygous for the mutant gene. If all babies show the dominant mutant gene, then the odds are 95% that the animal under test is homozygous for the mutant gene.

Hope that helps.

ok so it comes from ron tremper... if its a tremper lizard then it has been breeded from his lizards? is there anything special about that or who cares?

another quesion... you know how human albinos must shy away from direct sunlight? and how sunlight hurts their eyes? does the pertain to reptiles as well? how could you put a basking light on an albino if it hurts their eyes... so if they are the same as human i do not want albino offspring. i also do not want normal leo offspring. and i cant spend a load of money either, so the super hypo tangerine carrot-tail is out of the picture lol.

just making sure... ANY MALE LEO i can breed with my normal leo? and must i buy another female for the cage as well? i remember reading somewhere that if it is a 1:1, the male will dominate the female and harass her.

ps.. i like the circle back, jungle, pastel, hyper melanistic

As long as it's a male leopard gecko it can breed with your female leopard gecko. So keep in mind that, that gecko isn't just a super hypo tangerine carrot-tail, it's a super hypo tangerine carrot-tail leopard gecko.
