pacman feeder fish and ick

NMTSPARKS Jan 25, 2004 02:39 AM

im trying to cycle a feeder fish tank. now it has ick. im treating with salt increased temp and cooper safe. do you think cooper safe treated fish can harm my pacmans. is ick harmful or contagious to pacmans. ive used cooper safe with my adf with no harm. not sure about pacman frogs and my reptiles

or do you know of a safer method to treat feeder fish for amphibian consumption. seems like all the feeders i buy show signs of ick in a couple days. i try to keep fish for a few days before i feed to avoid feeding ick to my frogs and reptiles.

thanks for any in put
kris

I do not feed feeder fish to my frogs. The main reason is the horrid conditions they are subjected to at the fish store. But also, butritionally, they really aren't necessary. I just give my HFs nightcrawler worms and large crickets dusted from time to time with Reptivite.

I have a turtle that HAS to eat feeder fish. I never really worried about ick. I'm pretty sure it's a fish-only disease. I worry about worms more.
I think copper is generally safe for vertebrates, but all the warnings on the bottle don't really give me a great feeling. I always try to avoid using it in my pet fish unless it's really necessary. Salt seems to work pretty well in most cases.

Feeder fish are not an acceptable food source for horned frogs. Many times they are loaded with lots of nasty things and are not all that healthy as they are high in fat. I would ditch the whole colony unless you want to keep them as pets. Chances are if they have ick they will die anyway (even when treated with antibiotics many of them still die). Andy
