what is the best substrate for a western? and what is the best sized tank?

I am using aspen bedding. It works great, Holds the tunnels they make really good. Try going to www.hognose.com tons of info on hognoses.

Aspen is the best, and a 20 gallon long is an ideal tank. It would be great for a small male and big enough for an adult female.
