Keeping Greens Fresh

clickman Jan 25, 2004 09:34 AM

How does everyone keep greens fresh? I have a mini-fridge I keep herp stuff in (Greens, silkworm chow, etc) and some of the greens will go bad, and then you have that bad-greens-smell inside of it... I just cut off the stems, get what I need, throw it in a bowl and stick it in right now.

The mini fridges are arder to keep greens fresh in. I am not sure why, but I am sure it is something to do with the temps. I keep mine in plastic ziploc bags and squeeze al of the air out of the bag and seal it. This seem to help them stay fresh longer thatn other ways I have tried like paper towels and those "veggie" zip loc bags. Just my two cents.

I usually break off all the leaves from the greens I'm using in the salad that week. I break the leaves into smaller chunks, but still not the size I would feed to them. I put them in a colander wash them real good. and mix them up. I let them sit in the sink to dry for a while. Shaking them up every 5 minutes or so to get all excess water out of them. When they are as dry as they are going to be I take a large flat square shaped glad ware container or the like, and line the bottom with two paper towels then stack the greens on top and then cover the greens with a paper towel as well. I keep the greens fresh like this a lot longer then any of the other ways I've tried. Every other day or so when the paper towels are too moist I put in dry ones. This keeps the leaves dry, but also keeps enough moisture in the container so they don't spoil. To much water sitting on the leaves is bad, and to much air getting to them is bad. Seems the container with the paper towels to hold excess water, but still enough moisture to keep them crisp works well. When the paper towels get to moist put in new ones. Works well for me. I take what I need for that day, rinse in cold water again to get them nice and wet, and break them up into the feeding bowls.
