I visited a Petland Discounts in Yonkers, NY today. I had never been in one before and was curious to see if they had the Fluval replacement sponges that I need; they're hard to find where I live and I'm getting a little tired of paying shipping costs online. At any rate, I found the sponges but I also found something that's still bothering me. As my friend and I walked in, she said, "Look at those birds!" I noticed them too - parakeets, maybe about 10 of them, in what looked to be a 10 gallon aquarium! This disturbed me. As I moved to the back of the store, I naturally gravitated towards the aquarium section, and found the turtles. This bothered me even more - 4 adult (10 inch or so, I would say) RES were crammed into a 30 gallon tank, with barely enough water to swim in, let alone room to move in. The turtles looked healthy enough (i.e., no visible shell rot or cloudy eyes) but seemed terribly unhappy, and glad to see me when I bent down to talk to them; it didn't seem like they got much attention at all, if any. I am so worried by this. The general atmosphere of the store was dirty, dusty, and cluttered, and the other animals in there seemed crammed in and unhappy as well. I did buy the sponges since I need them, but felt terribly guilty about supporting this business and needless to say I will never be shopping there again. Has anyone else had this type of experience there, and is there anything we can do?
