What do I need to know about keeping turtles outdoors?

sederah86 Jun 06, 2003 05:36 PM

Im moving to a new house and theres's a deck so I'm happy that I'll be able to fit a kiddy pool out there for my turtles since their old enclosure was kinda cramped. I'm curious to know if I NEED a heater out there or if they'll be fine in the cold. I know I'll probably need some type of net or protection over to cover so that cats or whatever wont get them but I'm just concerned about temperature. thanks

First of all - do you have a screened porch? If not - the kiddie pool is not deep enough because racoons, dogs, possoms, etc. can get your turtle.

Next - It's best to get a large rubbermaid container - it is deep enough.

Then - you're going to need a basking area so the turtle can get out of the water. The ones with suction cups work pretty well.

Also - put in water plants like water hyacinth so algae does not grow.

Depending on where you live - the water can heat up to 85 degrees during the day and cool off again at night. So you might want the tank in a partial shade area so it has a chance to cool off.

I think that's it for now!
