How often do I feed?

perfect1 Jan 25, 2004 02:52 PM

Please help me, I have a female brazillian rainbow, she's a baby about 2ft. She's doing well and looks perfect but she eats alot. I was told that neonates don't get fat(she isn't) and that they should be offered food quite often. Because if they eat they were hungry and that they just grow. I've been to many sites and they all say different things. I have fed her everyday one pinky rat or hopper mouse (thawed). And she always eats no problem. The only time she didn't was right before a shed. She looks fantastis but I can't imagine that in the wild they would eat nearly as much as she is. I have cut her back to one hopper every other day but how much should I feed her? Is she just a glutten? One web site said neonates should only be fed monthly, or biweekly. Help please, anyone.

I feed my snakes once a week. Everyday is VERY too much...! I never read on the web that's ok to feed baby snake monthly or everyday.

i would feed 2 or so appropriatley sized prey items every week to 10 days. Don't feed pinkies, they can eat larger prey than these, feed at least hopper mice.

I think you are feeding too frequently, unless you want it to grow super fast. Their are detrimental health risks to overfeeding. At 2 feet, how old is it? Two to four months would be my guess. I feed no sooner than 6 days, usually between 7-10 days. I prefer mine to poop before their next meal.
