Hide over a heat source?

aklaim Jan 25, 2004 04:06 PM

I have a buddy that has a Leo, and we were discussing how they slow down their eating in the winter. His still eats about 6 crix a week, and mine doesnt eat period. He thinks that I sould move her hide over to the warm/heated side of the tank for the winter, especially if my newer house (we just moved) is colder than the previous house. He does it, and his gecko is fine, but everything ive read has always said dont put one on the heated side, for fear of burns. Let me know your thoughts and opinions on this please. Thanks.

Hi

Yes, you should always keep a hide on the warm end of the tank, along with a moist hide for your gecko to go into, also keep a hide on the cool end of the tank.

By doing the above, your gecko can regulate it's on body temperature. If to warm it can go to the cool end and find a hide there to be in and if too cool it can go to the warm end and have a hide there. Keeping a moist hide in the cool end will help it to shed when it's time and the like it.

Hi

If you want to save money, you can take a clean coolwhip dish with the lid on and turn it upside down, so that the lid will be touching the bottom of the tank and just cut a big enough square hole in the side. For a substrate (what you will put on the bottom) you can use a papertowel and you will need to mist the papertowel and keep it moist, thus the moist hide. This creates moist humidity and help the geckos shedding skin stay moist so that he/she can pull it of easier.

They will shed every two to two and a half weeks and they eat there own shed, and that is normal.

Some people use other substrates, but I use papertowel, because I fell safer in doing so.

I did it myself without even thinking about it but what is the advantage of putting the dish in upside down?

Inverted containers have a larger base and are therefore less likely to tip over. For adults I prefer to use an upright margarine tub with an entrance at the top, this helps keep the substrate from being kicked out. For hatchlings I use a smaller container with the opening on the side. I use paper towel for the hatchlings, and either moss or vermiculite for the adults.

Fritz are you really seriously asking why you put the top of the container on the bottom...

You do it because it keeps the humidity in it...

Fritz Jan 25, 2004 08:08 PM

are you seriously saying that humidity wouldn't stay in with the lid on top??

Why put the lid on the top?

Fritz Jan 25, 2004 08:10 PM

lol, I've just seen a lot of people recommend putting the container upside down. I did it myself for a few of them and have no idea why

Hi

Because there is a little more room space wise at the top than the bottom, to were the container starts to narrow.

Hmm should the moist hide be on the cool end? I have mine in the middle, they never use it though, then again, only had them a day...

They all hide out in the big tree trunk on the hot end :P

savigeckolvr Jan 25, 2004 06:08 PM

I had mine in the middle but someone I think it was stargecko maybe said it was better to put it on the warm side. So I have Geico's in the middle in his 10 gallon because thats where its always been lol and Tiny's is on the warm side because I moved it after it was suggested. It doesnt seem to make a difference but I wouldnt put it on the cool side it might not get humid enough just cold and wet lol.
