Surinam biting himself while eating

Phoebe_n Jan 25, 2004 04:52 PM

Hello -

I am not sure if this is a problem or just my suri being dumb When he eats (pre-killed/thawed rat pups) sometimes he will have his head very close to his side and will end up sinking his fangs right through a scale and get stuck.

He can pull himself free after a bit, and the worse damage he has done is pull out a single scale, but he does puncture them when he "misses" the pup in his mouth...should I put some antibiotic ointment on the spots that he bites? Or will he be ok as long as there is not a more serious wound? Does anyone elses' boa do this?

Thanks for any insight!

Hi,
I have a boa that did this.He stoped when I started using prongs.Just grab the prey item by the tail and when you go to feed make sure he has to reach out and grab the prey.Make sure the prongs are long enough so if he misses he won`t get your had.

Thanks for the advise! I have tried this, and though he still sometimes reaches around towards himself after grabbing the prey, he isn't biting himself nearly as much!

Thanks again!
