I haven't found their poo to stink that much. Regular cleaning drastically reduces the smell. Really smelly poo is often an indication of parasites in most reptiles.
Just yesterday I was sniffing in my geckos terrarium to see if the fecal matter was breaking down. Mine is a naturalistic setup with lots of plants in potting soil, so I just stir the dirt really well once in a while as is recommended in the Rhac book. Anyways, something stank really bad! I was concerned until I realized there was a huge gecko turd right under my nose! So yes, if you are close enough the poop really stinks!
