Which expos are worth the trip???

trueboaphile Jan 25, 2004 07:41 PM

I live in Indiana and I am planning on hitting a couple out of state shows this year. I drove to Jacksonville in 2002 and was a little disappointed (sorry Wayne). I would appreciate input on 2 day expos that are worth the trip (besides Daytona) and not on the west coast. NARBC Chicago is all ready scheduled. And being a boaphile, the input from other boa lovers matters most to me. Thinking about the Tampa spring show, F.I.R.E., and the Carolina show (Cueto's). Thanks for your time.

I am unfamiliar with the east Coast shows other than Daytona beach in August..

For Boas, nothing comes close to the Daytona show.. at least compared to the shows in Houston, DFW and the IRBA (San Diego) shows I've been to. I have friends and partners who do the East coast events and Chicago, mostly they have good things to say about those shows but do also agree that Daytona is the place to go to see Boa, talk Boa, get Boas.

Mostly, the bulk of the boas produced in this country, especially the constrictor sub-species aren't out until June or even later., so the April, May, June shows can be mainly showing imports or left-overs from last season.

If your looking for boas the F.I.R.E. show is not the place. Its a great reptile show, but there are very few boas there. The best i've seen is a few albinos and thats about it.

I would rate the Tampa show above F.I.R.E.(for boas,) but I gotta say, Daytona blew me away last year. It was like the trading floor of the New York stock exchange in there, and HUGE. There was boa breeders from all over the world, too. I saw some large booths from Europe and other parts of the world where I couldn't recognise the accent. I got a great deal on a boaphile cage w/ heat and a really nice Suriname, plus a snake hook. This year, I'm going to take my new digital camera.

I would try to the MARS show we go every year from IL. I think its well worth the trip www.reptileinfo.com you can find more info on it. Another I would suggest is the Hamburg Pa shows. There more geared towards hot snakes but usually have alot of nice boas there as well. Hamburg will proablly be about 10hrs for ya. IMO it would be well worth it though. I havnt been there in a couple years because it always falls when I have other shows however I would be there in a heart beat if it didnt conflict with my show schedules. You can find that onein the events sections here. Theres several shows a year at Hamburg run by two differant people one was Dave Hess and the other Walt. Walt sold his to someone else. I dont know what kind of job this person is doing with the shows since he took over but Daves were always IMO way better then Walts shows. Hope this helps Jason
