First Time Breeder

HotRodHerps Jan 25, 2004 08:47 PM

Hi All,

Just got a proven pair of jungles. I have never bred carpets before (though I've tried). They were locking up before I got them and although I have seen no breeding activity I want to be prepared so I'm asking the experts.

How long does it take for oviposition after a successful breeding?

What is the correct temp and humidity% to incubate and how long does incubation take?

Attached is a pic the previous owner sent me of one of their last years offspring, as you can imagine I'm excited to see if I get eggs!

(Bobby, hope you don't mind I borrowed the pic) ...Oh and for those interested in a great breeder of arboreals, Bobby Pruett of Arboreals Etc is as good as they get. Thanks.

Bryan

The female Jungle will shed approx. 19-20 days after she ovulates -- this is known as her pre-lay shed. Oviposition normally takes place between 20-30 days after that. I incubate my eggs at about 89.5 degrees, and it takes between 50-60 days for them to hatch. I would recommend picking up a copy of either the Barkers book (Pythons of the World, Australia), or Marzecs book (The Reproductive Husbandry of Pythons & Boas). They will help answer most all of your questions.

Hope this helps & good luck with your breeding projects!

Thanks Will!

I actually have both of those books, but cannot seem to find the one (Pythons of the world) and thought the other (marzek) may have been outdated. I have an incubator on order and will set up asap with your recommended temps. I just got this pair last week but the female already looks "filled out" posteriorly. Fingers crossed and thanks again for the info!

Bryan,

More precisely, my incubation temps sit between 88.7 & 89.5. I wouldn't exceed 90 degrees. See if you can find your POW book, because it has tons of great info.
