rescue dragon medical question

beardiedragon Jan 25, 2004 10:00 PM

I rescued a Beardie a while back that had lost a few battles. When I got her she had lost a bunch of toes, tail and part of her right front leg. Everything has healed over fine... until now. I noticed today that on her front leg (she lost the leg at the joint from the elbow down), it appears as if the bone is beginning to show thru the skin. She doesn't seem to be in any pain. I am getting to the vet tomorrow. Any thoughts until then?

Is she walking on that end? It is a common problem in amputees of all species that there is not enough padding at the end of the bone and it starts to work its way through. It can be a very frustrating problem and sometimes they have to remove more of the bone or even the whole limb to get it to completely heal. I don't have any advice that you probably already know like keep her on paper towels or other clean surface to keep stuff out of the wound.

Is there any way to add a "boot" of some sort with a little padding to the limb? Like maybe one of those rubber protectors that goes on the end of a bolt with some cotton in the bottom of it? Might this work instead of having to remove more of the bone? Just a thought.

Maybe he can just close it with some stay sutures and get it to heal well and hopefully it will no longer be a problem for her. Good luck to you and her. At least she is in the right place to get quality care!!

maybe just wrap gauze around the stump and tape it in place could help out. Put a bit of tape at the end to allow for a bit more traction.

the vet may have some alternatives as well.

he told me to wash it well and do exactly what you said!
if that doesn't do it, then we're probably looking at cutting it back to the shoulder.

wish her luck

thanks
