What should I get Banded or Sahara female

mike3 Jun 06, 2003 06:40 PM

Hi at the momment i have a huge cage with two uros in there, 1 male and 1 female mali. I asked one of my friends and he said i could easily fit 2-3 more in my huge cage. It is HUGE. Since he knows a lot about uros I know it is good advice. I looked at all of the uro species at deer fern farms and narrowed it down to Banded uros and red or yellow saharan lizards. How much does a female Banded cost and a female Saharan cost.

Bandeds are really hard to come by, really hard so i hear, doug dix i do not believe has any at the moment, but i would assume due to their rare breed for them to be quite expensive. a saharan on the other hand would cost probably around 100 for a nice specimen but doug dix is pretty reasonable. also do you really want your mali male to cross breed to another species? Plus you should ask if it is ok to place different breeds together since in the wild they would probably never have seen a uro of a different breed.

Yes, I'm surprised that if your friend knows a lot about uros that he or she would suggest mixing them. If they are both wild caught they would be from different areas and possibly carry different parasites. Their systems can tolerate the parasites from their own region much better than some foreign parasite. Also, they may have different requirements or be different sizes, etc. I'd ask Doug Dix's opinion if you're thinking of getting one from him. Also, he should certainly be able to give you the price. Even though it's tempting to try several different ones in that big cage you might get another Mali female and some nice cage furniture and put the other species elsewhere if you want to try them. -Lucy
