My question is what size holes do you need in the screen for a rat (or a mouse) to eat through?

For mice the best size I ever used was 3/8" mesh. That's a very hard size to find, however, but I was able to order an entire roll for the project I was working on.
I have seen it for sale in the classifieds from two different dealers. I've not seen the add in a while, though.
I tried 1/4" and the mice could not eat through it. Some people on the feeder forum swear they can but mine never did.
Another friend built a rack around my design and used expanded stainless lath and his mice ate through it fine. Lath also comes in several sizes - I'm not sure which one he used.
I don't have as much experience with rats but when I built a rack for a friend of mine he tried 1/2" and has been very happy with it. His rack has been in operation for 10 years now with no trouble.
Thank you for the great information. I'm thinking of using expanded metal. I'll keep what you said in mind.
