Finally a safe loose substrate??

tokay_dude1 Jan 26, 2004 03:35 AM

After reading many sites on substrates and leopard gecko caresheets ect.. i came across a bearded dragon site owned by a person who has bred dragons for over 15 years.. in his time he says he has used peper towels and newpaper and then made a discovery with a hot wheat cereal called "Wheatena"..its granual..but also digestable(sp?) since humans eat it and we are able to digest it he says it is the safest loose substrate out there, I decided to see for myself..i have been using it for about 4 weeks now in my adult females 40gal breeder.. she eats her crickets on it every night, the first week she went for a cricket and ended up with a mouthful of "wheatena" 7 hours later she pooped it all out..i took the stool out and examined it to see if the grains were still hard..to my surprise they were actually VERY soft. i was worried the first week on having her on this substrate but now i have no worries at all..the Wheatena also has many vitamins in it which could also improve its "substrate value" fiber..calcium carbonate..etc.. I would reccomend this substrate to expirenced leo keepers and newbies..however..i have no tried this on babies or juvies yet ..im sure it would have the same effect but i wouldnt reccomend using this for babies maybe for juvies bot not hatchlings..thats my study..im not saying you all should go out and buy this..all im saying is that i think this is the best choice to go with in loose substrates..where you can find it...supermarkets..and some other places..its usuallt with the oatmeal and other hot cereals.

The difference is that Bearded Dragons are designed to digest vegetation. Leopard geckos are not.
