I'm pretty sure she is gone

Breathingbywires Jan 26, 2004 09:02 AM

My leo got out lastnight, and is lost in the wilderness of my basement. We've been searching forever, but I honestly have a feeling she is gone.. it's way to cold for her to survive! I feel useless because I can't find her.. *sniff* My first leo too.. only leo actually...

You should be ok, leos can usually take down to about frezzing if you she has a good amount of fat on her tail! Just keep looking.

yah but i think she was sick. she hadn't been pooping. i'm sure if she is alive she will come out from wherever she is.. my room is the only carpet in the basement and she'd find it the warmest spot. i can't do anymore looking until the evening when the parents get home to move heavy things

Theres been a few strings about lost geckos recently with alot of good tips about how to find them.

If you place a bowl of mealworms and water by a hide and around a heat source (mat or light) then sprinkle flour around it all you'll be able to see if she's coming out to eat and get warm. In my opinion once she finds a place thats warm and safe she'll most likely stay there, so if you do put out one of her hides that she's comfortable and familiar with you'll most likely find her there.

I dread having any of my guys get out. Not only is the place a disaster right now but theres also an access point to get into the walls. Where our fuse box is we created a wall around it so we could put in a full length door but we have yet to put the door on so it leads right into the wall.

Goodluck and keep us posted....i'm sure she'll be Ok

thanks for the tips. our basement is all cement and there are two spots she could get in between the newly drywalled bedroom and the walls of the house.. if so i'm out of luck there.
i'll try what you said.. but my gut feeling is telling me otherwise i'll keep you posted.

i for sure will be getting another leo if that is the case.

Have you hugged your leo today!!

There has got to be a warm spot or two in your basement. And i'm willing to bet that your leo found it. If i were you, i'd put out as many heat pads, and heat lamps as you can. Put them over and under the hides from your leos tank. The familiar hides and heat will attract your leo. Also put dishes of mealworms and water by the hides. Keep checking and i bet you'll find him after a couple of days. I hope you find him and good luck.

nalle Jan 26, 2004 11:43 AM

Put out some heating, food/water and then start sprinkle flour cross door openings and in wide circles around the heat/food spot you created, and around openings you might think it moved through. Probably easyest way to locate a lil lizzy on the run.

StarGecko Jan 26, 2004 11:54 AM

You underestimate our fat little friends. I had a leo loose in my house for 5 WHOLE MONTHS, IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER! Yes, come late spring, I found her alive and suprisingly well.

The idea to put out a heat pad is good. You leo will tend to crawl under appliances (like the dryer, stove, fridge, etc...were there is heat. )

My leo was loose for 4 months. Damn, and I thought I was special

Well.. she was a 7 month old with a not-so-fat tail, and I believe your escapee was an adult?? I think that adds on a couple more points.. so we're even Don't forget the hungry hungry chihuahua that roams my house..

Hi

How about one lost for eight months that was six months old.

When I finally found her, she was very much alive, but with a very skinny tail by then and I nursed her back to health and I still have her and she is doing great.

Take Care, TLB

p.s. when I found her I yelled so loud a family member came running to see what is wrong.

GaboonKeeper Jan 26, 2004 10:16 PM

Why brag about something that should not have happend in the first place???? I guess that is cool or something???? I dont get it...... Am I missing something???? If I find a leo that escaped can I be as cool as you guys?????

StarGecko Jan 26, 2004 11:11 PM

who worry about their leos when they escape. No one wants to have a gecko escape but it happens, they are escape artists and are more intelligent than I think many people give them credit for. One of mine managed to open her screen top, climb out, and shut it behind her as she left! I thought I was going crazy or someone broke into the house and stole her when I discovered her missing, as the cage top was shut, it was only when I saw her on a later occassion after she was found and back in her enclosure, and I saw her climbing up and hanging from her screen to that I finally figured out what happened. People worry terribly and get extremely upset when it happens, thinking their gecko will die, but the reality is, people almost ALWAYS find them alive, though it can take months. I've been posting on this forum for several years and only know of one person on this forum who didn't find theirs alive sooner or later, and that person had a cat, who killed the gecko and brought it to the owner...even this was months after it was lost.

Obviously no one wants a gecko to escape and would try to prevent it happening, but human beings are not omniscient and not everything is foreseeable by us mere mortals. Once a gecko escapes anyone would take steps to try to prevent it from happening again, if they can figure out how the animal escaped in the first place. The last thing someone needs when they are agonizing about their gecko escaping and worrying if it is dead is someone getting on their high horse and trying to make them feel bad.

I am not getting on any horses or trying to make anyone feel bad..... Just stating a fact...... Like I said I keep alot of venomous and cant afford an escape..... Maybe it makes me alittle more aware of things that can happen...... The fact is if there is a way out a reptile will find it...... I think it is careless to think otherwise...... It is careless to put a gecko or lizard or a snake in any container or box without a lid that can be clipped down or locked or in a cage that is not secured...... In my 20 some od years of keeping repiles and 12 or so year dealing with hots and thousands of animals pass through my hands I have never had an escape...... Sorry I just cant feel bad about something that could have been avoided especially when it is as easy as putting a lid on a container or putting clips on a cage or keeping it in a secure place where cats and or people cant knock it over....... And bragging about it just shows it happens when it should not be an issue..... Also shows a level of keeping skills........ And the same goes with venomous bites....... They should never happen and bragging just shows how stupid he or she was to get bitten...... Hey if I got bitten by one of my gaboons will you feel bad???? Dont think you would...... Because if I did it would be because of my own carelessness...... Telling someone you feel bad about what happend and telling them what to do to find it and correct the problem is one thing....... Bragging about it is another.....

You stick your nose into a good natured humorous interchange between two other people and put all kinds of inaccurate and completely ridiculous labels on it

I think you have issues. Work them out somewhere else.

By a venomous snake! The attitide that no sympathy is due if someone is somehow "at fault" for something that happens is heartless and inhuman IMO. People are human and not perfect by definition.

How do these leos get out of the cages???? Maybe being someone that keeps alot of venomous snakes its hard for me to understand how someone can be careless enough to leave a cage open or put a cage where it can fall or be knocked over...... Anyway, sorry for your loss..... I guess there is a lesson to be learned everywhere.....

Breathingbywires Jan 26, 2004 05:15 PM

careless enough. excuse me. not to sound like a [bleep] or anything but i'd rather put my leo into a box well cleaning her tank, instead of letting her rott in her own filth. she some how managed to find her way out of the box for the first time ever... and now.. she is gone. i own a pictus gecko *10 times smaller than a leo* and haven't had a problem with her in her trying to get out.

ahh this is just so frusterating.. *sorry for the rant*

Some people get a kick out of trying to make other people feel bad.

I don't think you were careless, only human. Not everything is forseeable by us mere mortals. Now that you know she can escape there, I'm sure you'll put her in a more secure box next time.
