Chloramines in Water

geckogirl72 Jan 26, 2004 09:40 AM

I recently received a notice from my local water department saying that they will be adding chloramines as a secondary disinfectant to my water in place of chlorine as of 2/1. There was a warning relative to reptile and amphibians, saying that the water needs to be treated before giving it to them b/c it partially breaks down into ammonia. I called my local public health officer and she said that less than 1% will be distributed through my tap.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, what did you do to treat your water? I wonder how much would be considered toxic to my geckos. More and more herp owners will be faced with this problem b/c of the EPA's urge to replace chlorine to reduce the amount of trihalomethanes in drinking water.

Thanks
