Need expert opinion on new ESU 20 W Super UV coil lamp

JFC31 Jan 26, 2004 10:10 AM

Does anyone have any opinions or knowledge of this lamp and whether it would be a viable option for a Panther? Is this a reputable company? It is a screw-in type flourescent bulb that ESU claims will output 3% UVB and 15% UVA. This lamp would be very convenient for me as my cham set-up is a Chameleon Canopy which has non-ceramic screw-in light fixtures that do not have the ability to handle 100W Mercur Vapor bulbs. However, I do not want to risk the health of a cham on a bulb that does not do what it says it does. The bulb would be less that 12" away fom the prime basking spot on the Canopy. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

these are great for lighting areas and work wonders on plants but that is about it.

they give off no heat really..(the bulb gets hot but heat doesn't seem to come out)
and the uvb isn't very high.
if you want it for plant growth i would go to home depot or lowes and they have ones that are 26 watts and give off the same amount of light as 100 watt bulb and the light has a blueish tint to it not the normal orange or yellow.

i use the ESU bulbs for my anoles in their smae tanks and they like them becuase they are very bright.

I don't have any experience with this specific bulb, but I would think that it wouldn't be enough uv. I think if you can supplament your cham with natural uv or add a tube or MV bulb some other way, this would be a good suplament, but as a sole u.v. source, the 3.0 UVB doesn't seem like enough (5.0 of tubes is hardly acceptable, but about as good as the tubes get) I think that this could be good for a Jackson, but panthers would need more uv. Then again, since it is coiled up and projected into one spot, mayby it will be alright. Just my opinions, like I said, I've never used one, just expressing some ideas! good Luck!
