Mealworm Bedding

IMacBevan Jan 26, 2004 10:47 AM

Just curious what people are keeping their mealworm colonies on. I've been using WormMan's bedding which is good, but I'm getting tired of sorting bedding from worms. Has anyone tried anything like a chicken laying mash or something reasonably fine that could be sifted to seperate worms from substrate?

Thanks,
Ian

Hi

I don't remember at the moment who said it, but they use bran and yellow cornmeal.

Layer Mash is the way to go. It is the exact same stuff that Fluker's sells for about $3-4 for 14 ounces. I got 10 pounds of mash for $2.33 no tax. I bake it for about 25 minutes to kill any eggs that might have stowed away. The stuff I get is coarse, so for ease of straining I toss it all in the blender and blend to powder. Why pay $35 plus for the same stuff? I would recommend layer mash to all.
