Before reading further I would like to say I am not an expert of monitors nor anywhere near it so read the following if you choose and only because you are willing to.

From the research I found, males tend to be bulker and their heads being larger, however, this only works for some species and it isn't even a sure process either. Some also have different colors around their face in order to sex them, but note this, these things show up later when the monitor is matured or grown. The easiest and most certain way is to either give it an xray(costly, but 100%), probe it (done by professionals only) and another way which isn't too certain if you dont see it but is 100% if you see it is the thumb and roll technique or whatever lol. This should be done by a professional or someone that really knows it, you can do it afterwards after you know how. Doing it without knowing how can injure your lizard. About sexing by looking at the nostrals I have no idea and I apologize for that lack of info.

Some you go by head shape and your 90% likely to be right, some go by the tail base, some by seeing a full eversion, and the best way to tell is females produce eggs, males dont.

Not only location but shape too. It varies so much from species to species, but with a little experience you can tell the difference at a pretty early age.
Dumeril's are pretty easy to sex by nostril location.
