cleaning inside of glass

lola44 Jan 26, 2004 12:57 PM

After trying several different methods mentioned here on the forum how to 'water' my beardie, I now have water marks on the inside of my beardies tank from spraying the sides (in hopes that he'll see the water running down and lick at it) What is a safe way to clean the glass on the inside? (I also have snotty nose marks on the outside from my german shepherd peering in but those i can handle ) Thanks for any info. L.

I just use nolvasan for general cleaning like that. I assume that your shepard does not stress out your dragon by getting so close? I think my dogs are more scared of my frills than the other way around.

naw, he doesn't stress him out,,, he's very seldom in the room where i keep my dragon and only gives him a glace (and a nose smear as he walks past the tank),,,, actually the lizard seems not to really notice him,,,he's never run to or away from the dog if he's looking in and has never puffed up or done anything that would indicate to me that he's upset. And, yes, i've read the horror stories about cats/dogs killing beardies. Does that cleaner cause streaking? (can you tell i'm going for a nice streak free look here?)

nolvasan is a disinfedtant with a very mild odor that wont harm your beardies. I use it for them as a bath on occation too. I have not had a streaking problem but it is not a glass cleaner. I use it because it is so safe.

I use anti-bacterial soap for cleaning up 'messes' but wanted something safe to get rid of the water marks on the glass. Thank you for the info,,,, i'll see if i can pick some of that up too.

you can pick it up at your local feed store or order online. prices range from $35-$55 a gallon. for general cleaning I use a dilution of 1:20, so that one gallon will make 20 gallons of disinfectant.

I also use Nolvasan for cleaning the glass in my enclosure and have no streaking problems. I've also heard you can use Windex with vinegar although I would probably take the BD's out of the tank just to be safe. DO NOT use windex with ammonia!

i kinda figured windex would be a no-no---but now that you mention it, vinegar and hot water might do the trick,, and i'll be sure not to keep the beardie in the tank will I clean it.

There is a recipe on Melissa Kaplan's website for streak free glass cleaner. It is located at the bottom of the 'cleaning and disinfecting' page.

vinger and water is a very common home made cleaner that's been around as long as I can remember. It certainly is alot safer than any other cleaner for glass out there and I find it works a heck alot better than Windex. Only need maybe a teaspoon of vinegar to a cup of water and vinegar has the added benefit of absorbing odour without harsh perfumes.
