Minimum Enclosure size?

smallfry Jan 26, 2004 12:59 PM

I was considering a 20G Long, but I'm concerned about having the correcet temperature gradient(s).

What would you folks recommend as the minimum tank size for 1 Mali to be comfortable.

thanks!

The more floorspace, the better. You'll get different answers as to minimum tank size from different people. I currently house my (single) mali in a 40-gallon breeder tank, although with a 55-gallon tank, he'd have more room to roam around and you can get a good temperature gradiant with it.

Thanks for the welcome! :D

Are breeder tanks those fat ones? I saw a 40G at the LFS and it was about the same height as the 20G long, but about 1.5x wider.

I'll have to scope out some 50G tanks and see how big they actually are.

I had my mali in a 20L for a while. It's fine for the juvie stage, but not as an adult.

Breeder tanks are always wider rather than taller, which should suit your uro just fine. If you think about it, the taller the tank, the harder it is to get the basking temp hot enough. Plus, I'm sure your little one will appreciate the running room

Good luck

Instead of looking at the minimum needed, perhaps look at the maximum you can allow space for.Maybe it'll end up the same anyways but if your focus is on trying to have more room, you'll likely have less problems with gradients etc and will most likely have a very happy Uro.Chances are you'll discover you have more room and end up with more space in the enclosure.I know my little guy uses all the space i allow and i wish i could supply more.

Just my input so take it for what it's worth
