Would a python venture out into the cold?

lofgren Jan 26, 2004 03:22 PM

Disgusted with myself:

I lost my 18 inch baby python in about 5.4 minutes right in front of me. It’s been gone just under a week now. I don’t need to know where to look. I have disassembled most of our appliances and stayed up very late set food, water, and heat boxes out. I feel bad enough about it so no slamming please. That quiet little ninja could be anywhere being only 18 inches.

I don’t believe there are any holes big enough to let the snake venture out of the house. BUT: It is starting to snow here and I was wondering if you have ever seen a snake willing to venture out into the cold? Even though this would cause its own demise! Can I assume that the snake will survive within the confines of the warm house at least until warm weather comes?

Thank you,
Jerry

I would keep the heat in your house up and have a couple areas on each floor that are at about 90. Place a brained mouse on a paper towel to see if it comes.

I didn't loose a Ball but I did loose a Gopher Snake. He was gone for over a month. I did the same as you. Looked high and low and everywhere in between. Then one day we found him in the hallway trying to get into the vent to the heater. He's probably curled up somewhere tyring to get warm. He will eventually come out when he's damm good and ready (*_*).

I would look into any gaps or crevices that could lead to a basement, if you have one. Not too long ago, my female got out (yes, it was my fault, because I trusted that my friend had closed the cage properly but did not, and the snake got out overnight.) We looked high ald low for her, even in the absement (which is dirt-floor and right now is a horrid 13 degrees F.) We checked the basement every day, because stupidly there was a gap in the heating vent where a snake could fit in and end up in the basement. Sadly, about a week after her escape, we found her in the basement up by the rafters, presumably trying to get back upstairs. I cried for hours about it.
I know how horrible you feel about it. But if there are no gaps or crevices that lead outdoors, I doubt your snake has escaped.
I have since had my boyfriend patch up the stupid gap in the heater that led to this in the first place, but it does not make me feel any better about this all. Try looking in any heating ducts or in cupboards by pipes leading down to the basement (if you have a basement) would be my suggestion. Good luck in your search.
