Shed over the eyes

surfdude660 Jan 26, 2004 03:49 PM

I have a california king snake that is about 20" long and a little over a year old. She eats two small fuzzies a week and sheds about once a month. Sometimes, her eyes will have a piece of shed on them. This is not before or after she sheds, just at random times. What is this and what does it mean? Thank you in advance.

Do you have any way to post a pic? Or can you describe it in a bit more detail? It kind of sound like something one of my sand boas has.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

It sounds like some left over skin from a shed to me; are you sure what you're seeing is external and not within the eye itself? Are you using a substrate like aspen that may appear to be skin (I've seen this before)?

If it's a piece of skin still attached, I'd recommend using some light weight cellophane tape and putting a small strip across the eye to gently remove it; using forceps or something else is tricky anyway but even more so with a small snake.
