Southern hognose color phases?

ramsnake Jan 26, 2004 03:51 PM

Everywhere I read it says that there's only one phase of the southern hognose. But it seems like I'm seeing two different color phases. Beige with black and light grey with black. Sometimes a mix of both. Seems like different localities have different colors, how come they're not recognized as so?

There are a few variations of the H. simus however they are not as variant as their eastern cousins......You have pretty much summed up the bulk of the variations, some lighter, some darker, gray to brown but there are a few exceptions to the rule....Like a orange phase Male that is owned by Kevin Enge....here is a female that I own which is a Red variation....No melanistic specimens have been caught to my knowledge and the only amel died in captivity years ago. BUMMER! There are some locality similarities but I've seen specimens that look like they are siblings that were caught 100 miles apart and specimens that were caught with in 1/2 a mile of each other that look totally different. Either way Southerns kick ass!

Beautiful animal. Thanks for the pic. I more or less figured that was the deal. It still makes it very intresting, you never know what you might find. The pair is doing great, they are on thier second meal and are adjusting to their environment. I'm still trying to get pics of the southern found in okeechobee co. Talk to you soon,
Joe
