What type of Chameleon

montgo66 Jan 26, 2004 04:51 PM

I am looking into adding a chameleon to the family. I have a lot of reptile experience, but not with cvhameleons. I would like some insight as to which species is best to start with.

I have also seen conflicting messages about what is best to house them in. Could someone who has had success with chameleons let me know if screened cage, aquarium, etc. is best?

The general consensus will point you to screened enclosures..
The devils advocate will point you to something else..

Since I am the one authoring this response, I will give you MY opinion on the matter.
I give two thumbs-up to the screened enclosure.
If you need some reasons, I got a whole drawer full of them, so just ask.

What is the best chameleon to start out with?
There is a learning curve that comes with chameleons. In my opinion, there is more of a curve than with most other reptiles. So, most will suggest a chameleon that will live through any mistakes you might make.

I'd also like to point out that different chameleons require different setups. Some live better in hot dry climates, some live in cooler more humid climates and there are varying degrees therin.

So, not only do you want a chameleon that will survive your education, you also want a chameleon that you can provide a suitable habitat for.

One more thing. Check out a bunch of different species. Look through the KS photo gallery. Use a search engine to find webpages on chameleons. Having a chameleon that you enjoy looking at, is a big part of the experience.

Wrap-up: A chameleon that is coupled with your skill level. A chameleon that you can provide suitable habitat for. A chameleon that matches your "cool" factor.

A bunch of us head to the chatroom almost every-night. We'd be more than happy to assist further.

i asked the same question a little of 2 months ago and the general question that was asked back was where do you live. i live in ohio and the seasons change back and forth so the best chameleon for me was a veiled. they live in climates that change from very hot and humid to climates that are cool and have little humidity so they are used to change. also a good screened enclosure is the "reptarium" cages that are inexpensive and easy to put together. also a veiled is not to expensive and and very beutifull. make sure you get a male so you dont have to worry about egg binding and laying and also a cham that is not younger than 3 months old to make it easier to find food for.mine was 4 months old and and so cute and small. in the month and a half ive had him he has doubled in size and so full of spunk. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU USE CALCIUM VITAMIN POWDER ON YOU CRICKETS SO YOUR CHAM' GROWS BIG AND STRONG AND MBD FREE. enjoy and have fun with what ever cham you choose!!

Thanks for the input so far!

Is there one species that seems to be friendlier than others?
