The general consensus will point you to screened enclosures..
The devils advocate will point you to something else..
Since I am the one authoring this response, I will give you MY opinion on the matter.
I give two thumbs-up to the screened enclosure.
If you need some reasons, I got a whole drawer full of them, so just ask.
What is the best chameleon to start out with?
There is a learning curve that comes with chameleons. In my opinion, there is more of a curve than with most other reptiles. So, most will suggest a chameleon that will live through any mistakes you might make.
I'd also like to point out that different chameleons require different setups. Some live better in hot dry climates, some live in cooler more humid climates and there are varying degrees therin.
So, not only do you want a chameleon that will survive your education, you also want a chameleon that you can provide a suitable habitat for.
One more thing. Check out a bunch of different species. Look through the KS photo gallery. Use a search engine to find webpages on chameleons. Having a chameleon that you enjoy looking at, is a big part of the experience.
Wrap-up: A chameleon that is coupled with your skill level. A chameleon that you can provide suitable habitat for. A chameleon that matches your "cool" factor.
A bunch of us head to the chatroom almost every-night. We'd be more than happy to assist further.
