Vietnamese Blue sudden change of temperment

kick_baal Jan 26, 2004 05:36 PM

While we seem to all be wearing our Asian Rat Snake hats, I thought I'd pose one for anyone who's ever bred Blue Beauties. Do they get R-E-A-L pissy once they've been knocked up? My female hasn't ever given me so much as a loud puff in the 2 years I've had her. Now, my little girl is coiling up, inflating her neck, striking, and huffing at me whenever I get near her. I placed her in hibernation with a large male Taiwan and intended to separate before I thought she was receptive because I really wanted to wait until she was 3 yrs old before I placed her with my large male Blue. She looks robust but I can't see any lumps in her body to give me the impression that she is carrying eggs. If I can establish the first possible date of insemination somewhere around the second week of December, when would it become plainly obvious that I'm going to be a "granddad"?

I have not noticed a big change in temperment when I had a blue gravid but it could happen as it does with females of some species.
Hopefully your female is not gravid. My taiwans have eggs that are quite noticeably larger around than my blues. With your female blue being young and the father being a taiwan there would be a greater chance that she could become egg bound. Thats why I never put any of my snakes together unless I am attempting to breed them.
It's usually easy to feel the eggs in the last couple of weeks or so before she is going to lay. Let her crawl through your hand with your index finger held horizontal, applying light pressure on her belly. If she is gravid you should feel them by the time she sheds next time.
Good Luck. Randy W.
