More lighting questions...

ladyinred143 Jan 26, 2004 05:43 PM

Man, I feel dumb not knowig all this, so I really really appreciate all your help.

I thought the UVB lighting was what they bask in, to kep them warm, but I saw below that the UVB light doesn't give out heat.

So what does the UVB light do, and do I need a UVB light AND a basking light?

Yes, you need a UVB light and a basking light. I believe there is a light available that produces both, but I think it is fairly new and probably pretty expensive. Maybe someone else will comment on that. I plan to find one when my UVB coil light needs to be replaced. I currently use two clamp lights.

The basking light provides heat that allows the turtle to regulate its own temperature (cold blooded) they can climb out to warm up and jump back in to cool off. The UVB light simulates sunlight (not nearly as good) and promotes healthy shell growth. Some keepers provide food supplements to give the turtles the vitamins/minerals the sun provides, but most will tell you to use a UVB light.
