I am looking for a new snake what do you all think? Rainbow Boa VS. Blood python.

poisonfrog420 Jan 26, 2004 08:21 PM

I am thinking of either getting a rainbow boa or a blood python. I am wanting to get a pair for breeding and pets. So far I like the idea of a rainbow boa because they give live birth and like the cooler temps. The things I don't like about the rainbow boas is they seem to be more sensitive to temp and humidity than the blood pythons. I do not like the idea of messing with the eggs of blood pythons.

Here is what I need to know about each species:

What is the average adult size of each kind? Any difference between the sexes?

What size cage is needed?

What are the specifics of the care for each snake? (temp, humidity, substrate, etc.?

Is one kind of snake a better feeder than the other?

At what age/size do they usually breed?

Over all, which do you prefer and why?

Which snake has a better temperament?

Thanks for answering all my questions, Jake.

Hatching eggs is a very satisfying accomplishment. Bloods will tolerate more humidity variation but they will get respiratory problems if kept too cold.

Females are larger in both species. Average adult length of both species is 5.5 to 7 feet long but for the same length a Blood Python is more than twice as "big' as a BRB
>>

Blood Pythons need larger cages. At least 4x4 for a pair of adults.

Temperature needs to be higher for a Blood Python. Both require very high humidity
>>

The both are big time eaters
>>

3.5 years or more is best for both species
>>

Rainbow Boas because they are more handleable as adults. An adult Blood is too heavy for easy handling and they are too bulky and stiff to wrap around your hands and forearms. When I had Bloods they would stay in the same posisitin in their cages for days. I sometimes would move them just to make them exercise. Very pretty snakes but LAZY!!!

Temperament is about the same but BRBs are much easier to tame because their bite is much much less painful.
